Science Is King

Science dictates lives: what you do, where you live, who you marry. It takes care of you, covers your bills, keeps you healthy, and all it asks in return is that you participate in a few experiments. Ridgeway has always been a control group, left mostly alone, but the Department of Science has been moving in, and everything is about to change.

Physical Description

Strands of spun sable are pulled back out of this young woman's face in an elegant style, woven into an elegant arrangement of braids, which are then woven into one longer, intricate braid, which falls down to her shoulders. The braid is twined with numerous luminous pearls, which stand out starkly against her dark tresses. Her eyes are the color of a stormy night sky, filled with the potential for tempestuous mischief. Her face is heart-shaped, angelic features hovering somewhere between the demure innocence of youth, and the regal beauty of womanhood. Full lips are often prone to mischievous smiles.

Three Best Traits

Poised: Marguerite is immensely popular with both her peers and the adults in her life. Her deft handling of not only her school responsibilities but also her vast volunteer and extracurricular responsibilities and the seemingly instant turnaround the school government has seen since she began to work with the student council president upon her ascension to vice presidency has won her much admiration, there are few in town who would speak ill of her. Her wisdom and grace are noteable and applauded for one so young

Gifted -She has a keen grasp on interpersonal relationships and has a natural gift for seeing how to use those relationships to her best advantage, or at worst making sure the rivalries don't boil over into open hostilities. Perhaps her greatest gift, though, is as a judge of people. She has an eye for both talent and loyalty and has stacked the deck in her favor by surrounding herself with extremely competent individuals, whether as Friends, fellow council members, or teachers.

Mature - Marguerite is a pragmatic and insightful woman, who learned many hard lessons. She is perfectly willing to make sacrifices of herself and others for the greater good, and while she certainly will feel the pangs of regret when she's forced to make such hard choices (especially if they might hurt those she cares for personally), she does not hesitate in doing so if it is the best course of action.

Three Worst Traits

Madness: There is a reason that Marguerite keeps such a perfect public image. She is a woman forged in hell, strengthened by grief and loss incomprehensible to most. But one cannot go through such agony without coming out changed, and while she does very well hide this from most, in times of great stress, in times of need, or when she feels completely abandoned, the disguise unwraps itself and reveals the scarred, fragile girl hidden beneath the disguise of a perfect specimen.

Dependant: Emotional bonds are one of the few things that keep marguerite going. Broken, beaten, abandoned. She relies on a select few people to keep her sane, seperation from these people that is unplanned and unprepared for can cause....extreme volataile emotions, ranging from a meltdown to a complete emotional shutdown.

Obsessive: Probably the most minor of her three worst traits. She years for distraction and occupation at all times lately, though it wasn't always this way. She can work herself to near death, forgetting things like food and drink until a task can done, which has more than once led to someone finding her passed out in the council room or the library.

Best Memory

The first five years are a painful blur of drugs, booze, forced addiction, abuse. A living nightmare that she couldn't wake from. They kept her addicted to expensive drugs so that she wouldn't run away and tell anyone about what they did, how they beat her, pressing hot iron into her skin and watching her burn and scream. But then came the day daddy got a little too high, and mommy a little too drunk, and in their crazed haze, ensured her freedom via a murder-suicide. It wasn't long after that law enforcement found her, got her detoxed, patched her wounds, and had her shipped off to an orphanage, in hopes the at the time five-year-old girl would eventually forget.

At first, she was terrified, the home had been one thing of course, but this was a strange place full of indifferent caretakers. She did her best to keep her head down at first, to stay out of everyone's way and not attract attention. But then /he/ found her, out of everyone, even the boys he could have sat with, he pushed past the idea of 'girls had cooties' to sit with someone shaken and afraid of her new environment.

From then onwards they were inseparable. Holding hands and walking everywhere. They shared their troubled pasts, their future dreams, and what they imagined the future would be. It was if she had finally found a missing piece to her soul that she had been lacking. They filled the empty part of one another that, in time, they would learn no one else was capable of filling in quite the same way.

So despite the pain, this is by far Margeurite's happiest memory.

Worst Memory

Every so often the orphanage would host charity fundraisers, and at the end of the night some of the older children would be asked to get up and thank those that donated for help ensuring the orphanages continued success. It usually varied from cringey and awkward to bumbling like adorable, and when they were younger Marguerite and her friend would sit in the shadows with some snacks and giggle at the spectacle.

But this year was different, this year /they/ were the spectacle. But deciding to change it up, they vowed to one another they would change the perception of the event, get up there with prepared speeches and for one night, be perfect examples of a boy and girl.

Neither of them could have predicted how that simple decision would change their life. Especially not when the fallout came. She was used to strangers approaching her, as an orphan many wanted to see if she was their type, but she didn;t take offense when most opted for a natural child instead. kids her age were at school all the time and rarely home, why would they want to adopt a child when they could just have their own who would be a proper family member home for dinner every night?

But this couple stayed, they asked her all sorts of questions about her life, about school, about her friends, they seemed to want to know all about her. Marguerite tried her best not to get her hopes up, but at the end of the night, when the event was over, she couldn't help but invite them to come visit her again sometime on the weekend.

So she was beyond ecstatic when they actually did and offered to adopt her. In that moment she wasn't thinking of her friend and lifetime crush. Her head was full of dreams and fantasies about what it would be like to finally have a family once more, and so she accepted. What little belongings she had were packed up and she was moved from her small shared room in the orphanage to one of the refurbished old town mansions.

But then something went horribly wrong.

She had gotten some pocket money from her family to buy presents for her friends, and since she only had one friend she could splurge. She bought two rose gold rings, one a simple band of circle links like a chain and the other bedecked in jewels. She went back and gave the plainer one to him, something for him to remember her by and then they hurried to go pack. She thought he had left the room and was going to change, only for him to walk in on her, in her underwear, scars bared for the world to see.

She screamed at him, cursed at him, and chased him out. Didn't speak to him the rest of the night. It was all over. He had seen her scars, he would never love her now, she was just a flawed and imperfect piece of trash and she could never change that. She had loved him since she first met him, even as young as ten she knew that, but now that meant nothing, he would never look at her the same way again.

Soon after she moved away to come to town, and she hasn't seen him since.

History

They named her Marguerite. Wisdom, precious, desired, a gem used commonly in Christian religions and one that adorned the neck of any proper lady. So perhaps it was fitting how silently she entered the world, like a lady, quiet and demure, to the point that they initially fretted over if she was even truly alive, with how quiet and still she was.

She was not born to a good home though. The next five years are a painful blur of drugs, booze, forced addiction, abuse. A living nightmare that she couldn't wake from. They kept her addicted to expensive drugs so that she wouldn't run away and tell anyone about what they did, how they beat her, pressing iron into her skin and watching her burn and scream. But then came the day daddy got a little too high, and mommy a little too drunk, and in their crazed haze, ensured her freedom via a murder-suicide. It was if she had finally found a missing piece to her soul that she had been lacking. They filled the empty part of one another that, in time, they would learn no one else was capable of filling in quite the same way.

Marguerite cried the day she had to stop spending time with him for the sake of going to school, he was a boy and didn't cry, it would be unmanly, but there was a look to his eyes that stayed with her while she was away, and their weekends and holidays were /always/ spent together. Inseparable and close as always, the half to the others whole.

The school began to pull the young orphan out of her shell though. There was so much to do, and so many people to meet. While she never felt much pressure to be liked, since she had a good friend at home, she finds herself making lots of friends regardless and effortlessly getting straight A's in classes dealing with her ability to think in a social manner such as sociology and the like.. The classes she took and the friends she made had a direct correlation, she was a master at socializing and had a way of wrapping people around her finger. The praise she got for scoring so well in her classes also encouraged her to put more effort into those she couldn't naturally ace, and soon she was acing every class she had

Just as she was developing outside of the sweet-mannered but shy babe who had arrived at the orphanage, so too did her friend grow from boy to man. He was stricter now, though never to her, professional, polite, charming, seemingly everything she could guess society must want in a man. Her teachers never talked much about men, outside of the outright disturbing sex-ed class, but whenever she imagined her future husband, his face is what entered her mind.

Yet none of these events could compare to those of her tenth year.

She never spoke to him from that day on. She preoccupied herself with settling into her new life and family, trying to convince herself that they were all she needed. But she could never forget her friend. Even as she enjoyed an allowance most children could ony dream of she could never seem to drown her sorrows, and she buried herself in work, work meaning being an overacheiver at school and taking on way too mant after school activitie than was really supposed to be done. As long as she was busy, as long as she didn't rest, she wouldn't think of him.
