Science Is King

Science dictates lives: what you do, where you live, who you marry. It takes care of you, covers your bills, keeps you healthy, and all it asks in return is that you participate in a few experiments. Ridgeway has always been a control group, left mostly alone, but the Department of Science has been moving in, and everything is about to change.

Brooke released a breath, not having realized she was holding it as they passed the threshold to the country club. At any point she expected someone to grab her arm and escort her outside, informing her that she didn't belong amongst all of the stiff suits, fancy dresses and the sweet flowery smell of expensive perfume.

She felt like an outsider. This was an event for people who were important for this town, and the idea that Solomon was one of them was still one she was coming to terms with. He'd given her a lesson on the story of the Hasenkamps and the history of Ridgeway. She remembered bits and pieces, but it felt as if all of this was about another person. At least her impression of her groom-to-be was decent. Their first date had been less awkward than the first time they'd met and while she still considered him a little bit of an odd duck, it was meant affectionately.

She had a light grip on his arm as they walked in, a little bit of worry in the back of her mind. Meeting his family on an important night like this was quite a bit of pressure for a second date. As she looked around the room, another thought struck her as well - If they got separated, she weren't entirely confident in her ability to find him against. The suits in the room came in all different colors, from navy, to light blue, from green to grey. Some wore bowties, some wore ties. They all looked the same to her.

"Is there always this many people?" She asked. She had imagined the event to be on a smaller scale. Not quite literally over a hundred of the most important men and women of the town.

It was kind of bad timing, Solomon couldn’t really deny that. The fact that his family’s annual invite only shin dig coincided with his partnership was less than ideal. He barely knew his wife-to-be and yet here he was, escorting her on his arm into the country club. He still felt bad about it, knowing there must be so much going through the poor woman’s head right now, she must be so overwhelmed. And yet he was prided by the way she was holding up.

Arm in arm, he could feel her fingers flexing against the fabric of his suit jacket and he reached over to squeeze her hand in hers in a gesture of reassurance. Unfortunately, this was a pretty normal thing for him, attending parties such as this and feeling completely at ease. He dipped his head in a nod as they passed by someone he recognized. Solomon couldn’t remember the guys’ name off the top of his head, but he knew chances were, he was important.

Her voice was quiet at his side, and he turned his head in response. “Yeah, pretty much,” he answered honestly with a tilt of his head. It was a bit hard for him to see it all from her point of view. Yes, there were people everywhere, talking, and murmuring, but nothing really seemed spectacular or out of place to him. “You blend in pretty well, by the way,” he voiced with a smirk to his face, meaning it a compliment. He had to admit, she was pulling off high society pretty darn well.

If he admitted it aloud he would probably seem like he was being dramatic. Mary certainly would think so but he didn't care. He was uneasy. Maybe even a bit frightened to be walking right into the Hasenkamp den. It looked safe enough, bright lights, fancy decorations, blissful music; he wasn't buying any of it. Any second those demure seeming shadows would release something to attack him. He didn't belong here. He could feel it in the eyes of the people they passed as they made their way inside the main ballroom. Of course Mary had wanted to be one of the first to arrive-something about catching the intended targets of her schmoozing- but Rafe only saw it as yet another block to add to his immutable suffering.

At least his suit was better this time around.

The wife had picked it out and it complimented her dress nicely as well as proving to be more comfortable than the last time he tried to look presentable. He was wearing a tie...which wasn't so bad seeing as how ties now had a positive connotation in his mind and the shiniest shoes he'd ever worn-also thanks to Mary. Shoes and tie and a suit as had been negotiated before the event. He had made sure to save the text thread between he and she to make sure she delivered on all her promises.

"What the fuck? We get a magician and they have Alex Fucking Heavens? Alex fucking Heavens, Mary. Do you know who that is? Please tell me that we don't have to stay for the whole thing. This is going to be torture, I can tell already."

He grit his teeth and eyed a woman with blue hair quizzically. So maybe all the members of the party weren't stuck up.

If there had been a little more time between receiving the invitation and to the actual party, Mary would’ve happily shelled out credits for a tailored suit. If it stopped Rafe’s complaining for the evening, it was credits well spent and with him being much more comfortable he also looked a lot less awkward. At the Snow Ball his posture had been awkward, and every time he moved it was obvious that it wasn’t his thing. He didn’t stand out as much in a bad way tonight, if at all. He did clean up nice, when he wanted to.

Put your phone away,” Mary refrained from rolling her eyes, instead letting them wander over the people in the room. Looking in particular for golden locks, sharp eyes and smirks that revealed that signature Might actually kill you-attitude that most of the older Windsor’s possessed. She wasn’t going to give Rafferty any ideas, his ego was already big enough, but she actually did appreciate that he’d agreed to go. She had to meet some demands, but in the end he was there and at least looked presentable. Considering how many important people, not to mention her sisters was attending… That meant something.

You can go to it afterwards – It lasts all night. This is only till around eleven, you’ll survive,” She pointed out, only a little edge to her voice. “Stop being so dramatic. Just, for one evening. You might even enjoy it, if you tried to relax.

Where Solomon lowered his head when they passed a guy, Brooke curiously peered over her shoulder. She wondered how many of the attendees were actual personal friends of the family, and how many were in fact strangers, who had a position in society that might benefit the Hasenkamp-family. It was a way to uphold power and position, even someone who really didn’t care for the real-life intrigue and kerfuffle was aware of that.

His little compliment to her made her smile a little more sincere, the one she had otherwise held onto being one of polite interest that was mostly neutral. It wouldn’t hurt her cheeks to hold for the evening, but it did get a tad bit wider. You blend in pretty well. She almost added a As well as someone with blue hair can, but didn’t end up doing so, instead just lightly squeezing his arm as an appreciative thank you, adding a “You don’t look half bad yourself,” under her breath. He did have more practice in this type of thing.

So how many people here do you actually know?” She asked, her eyes stopping for a moment at one of the other guests. He looked awfully familiar but she wasn’t sure if it was because he was a visitor at a club or something else. Potentially something music related, as she immediately had a tune in the back of her head.

[And what kind of people attend? What’s the criteria?” She asked, a slightly melodic tone to her quiet voice as green eyes returned to Solomon.

His family’s annual soiree was very high on Seth’s must-attend list of the year. It had been since he understood the importance of connections and image – which, to a man like him, was just about everything. So he was there from the moment the doors opened until the last guest left at night, shaking hands, exchanging polite compliments, and sharing charming anecdotes. If there was one thing the man knew how to do, it was grease the wheels. And he looked impeccable doing it, too, in a perfectly tailored navy blue suit paired with a classic white shirt, polished brown shoes, and a tie with an intricate pattern in purple nuances, chosen carefully from a substantial collection. Not one fold was ill placed, as was the Seth Hasenkamp way. He had also been wearing a brown coat, but that had been abandoned at the door.

He stood just inside the hall, politely waiting for his wife to join him before venturing into the mass of people already making conversation around him. This was his first real public appearance after marrying Ellie, and change had never quite been his favorite thing in the world, but he felt perfectly calm. Confident. Ellie was a Windsor, she was of the same pedigree as himself, and he was perfectly sure he had nothing to worry about with her. Really she was the perfect wife. Beautiful, proper, with excellent merit and an important job, exactly the kind of woman he wanted by his side. He couldn’t be more pleased.

Once she joined him, he offered out his arm the way he knew he was supposed to. At this point it wasn’t even a conscious decision anymore, just pure reflex. He turned his eyes on her and welcomed her with one of his polite smiles.

Ally was different. The good kind of different. He’d known it from the first text that went on and on. It’d made him smile instantly because Ally was entirely her own sort of person, and for that, he was glad.

They went on a few dates before their partnership, her contributing her rambles, him his quieter thoughts and opinions. It was a little awkward but sweet. Uncomplicated. It didn’t eliminate Cal’s nerves on their wedding day, but it did make him certain about one thing. Ally fit.

They’d been married three weeks now and had received an invitation to the Hasenkamp Soirée. It was shocking. How had he, Calvin Kohl, been invited to mingle with the social elite of Ridgeway? He was a detective, his duty to protect and serve, but he wasn’t special. Boswick had practically killed him with a look when Cal’s partner had let slip that he was attending. Regardless of why he’d been invited, he couldn’t turn it down.

With Ally on his arm, looking stunning in a shiny black number, Calvin tried to walk confidently into the country club. He was wearing his dress uniform since he figured the occasion called for it, but because of the few pounds he’d gained (his partner called it marriage weight), it was a tad snug.

They passed a gorgeous blonde that he was sure he’d seen in a magazine, Mary Windsor, and her husband, who Cal knew from a report, Rafe Malone. He didn’t recognize many others aside from the Hasenkamps, but he really liked the blue hue of one of the guests’ hair. “So,” he said, turning toward Ally. “You want a drink?” He wasn’t sure what they should be doing, or who they should be talking to, but drinks were a safe bet, right?

Entering into a new partnership had been very exciting, but also… Scary? Ally had certainly been nervous when she opened her notice, and even more so when she actually reached out to Cal. She didn’t exactly have great experiences with small town cops, and the thought of marrying another one had sent chills down her spine. But she quickly got the feeling that she had nothing to worry about. Cal might share a profession with her ex-husband, but that was just about all they had in common.

They had known each other for almost two months, married half of that, but she was already growing rather fond of him. He was kind and understanding, and though he didn’t say much himself he urged her to talk as much as she wanted to. He never gave her that look of frustration or exhaustion that she was so used to, and that was more than enough for him to win her over.

She was holding onto his arm perhaps a little tighter than she ought to as they stepped through the doors, but she was nervous and he was just about the only person she knew. Some of the others she had seen before, around town or even in a yoga class, but she couldn’t name very many. She wasn’t even sure what they were doing here, her and Cal. She felt very out of place, and couldn’t help but wonder if her husband felt the same way.

Her eyes were scanning the people around them, drawn by every little shimmer in their vicinity, when Cal spoke. She turned to focus on him and smiled brightly. She never failed to smile. “That would be really great”, she admitted, hoping that a little alcohol would make the situation feel less awkward.

Much more comfortable this time around and again he also agreed he could look like an upstanding citizen -with Mary's help. Despite the fact that with his mouth closed he actually could blend in with all the high ranking citizens of the party he still looked miserable. It clearly had to do with the contents of his phone because as he swiped his screen with his thumb the line in his forehead seemed to deepen. He ignored Mary's request and typed something instead. With all the influential people that would be here tonight there was no one there that was going to be interested in his talent. They were all going to be the science types or the people who Mary actually needed to suck up to. Did Mary honestly think being on the good side of the Hasenkamps was going to help his career or merit level? He had been on the good side of a Hasenkamp previously and it hadn't done squat because he was still in the same predicament.

He perked a bit, at Mary's acceptance of him going to the other event and began to mentally plan the schedule. Did anything state how long Alex would be there? He did seem to be the kind of guy who would party all night....

"Only to eleven? Only till eleven?" he squeaked "Its fucking six! You're really planning on staying for the whole thing? The whole thing?! How can you be sure I'll live? You have no way of knowing that. I could choke on an hors d'ouvre. And i'm not even being dramatic. You know I'm not. " he waved his arms around as they walked "Just what is there to enjoy here? Oh...I know...where's the booze?" he stepped ahead of her as "Eleven" was mumbled.

The partnership with Matthew was favorable. He was of good rank, he had an upstanding job, he looked nice, he dressed nice and smelled even better. Matthew seemed to follow her ideals and was easy to get along with. The trouble with Matthew wasn't Matthew himself but all the baggage that came with him. The people he was related to, his acquaintances. Some, it turned out that she was related to. It had been more than a shock when she turned into her new home and found that she and her sister were not only settled in the same neighborhood but were actually on the same street. Actual neighbors. She could borrow a cup of sugar if she was into that sort of thing.

The awkwardness was behind them now. Even so she still couldn't shake the feeling that yet again Windsor sisters had dipped into the same man pot. Not that she could hold it against her sister if she had. At least thats what she told herself.

All the Windsor women who were invited would be there of course, now that they were all officially partnered so Lizzie was as usual, stressed in making sure she would look her best. Better than her best. Better than the rest. Her inevitable dress swirled around her, slightly iridescent in the light. Being on her level, Matthew had agreed that they should attempt to get to the soiree early.

Her eyes roamed over the swarms of people who were entering with them, her arms looped through Matthew's so as not to lose him. She didn't spot anyone important but the night was still early. She turned to her husband, mouth poised to ask some question when a tall dark figure in the corner peaked her interest "Oh! Seth. Hello!"

Solomon could feel the way she squeezed onto his arm a bit hard, noticed how her smile widened slightly, a more honest grin twisting his lips. If only she knew just how a childhood was being a member of such a high society famiy. Certainly it was not all the glitz and glammer one would think it would be. The man shrugged his wide shoulders and took another glance around the room as more people began to filter in through the front entry. “Maybe seventy-five percent,” he answered, knowing there were a few in attendance he had never laid eyes on.

And more and more people just kept flooding on in. “I’m not in charge of the guest list,” he chuckled softly. Given that he was not the eldest male in the Hasenkamp family, he would not be taking responsibility for anything so important as far as he could tell. “Other prominent Ridgeway families, government officials, those in the top tier of their careers – mostly science, medical, or government agency related.” Surely not the best garbage man or delivery boy would be in attendance. “And their spouses of course.”

It just meant that not everyone here tonight would be perfect. But those who needed a little break were offered a night to prove to the family that they were worthy of good graces. Solomon smirked again, noticing quite a few people he recognized, but in his mind tonight was more about Brooke than the rest of Ridgeway. “You’re going to want something to make it through the evening. Drink of choice?” he asked with a tilted head, already guiding them in the direction of the bar. Just because he needed to be completely in control didn’t mean she couldn’t splurge. As long as she didn’t take it too far.

While she certainly was a prime candidate, discovering that he was to marry Mary’s sister had been - to put it lightly - awkward. With no precedence, he had no idea how to address it, or if he was even supposed to. Now that the dust had settled, for the most part anyway, though, he was left with a mostly positive experience of it. Besides, it was undeniably nice to for once have a wife by the arm who knew how the world worked. It was strange; just a few months earlier, he had sat by the bar with Mary, lamenting their respective partners - now he was here with her sister, a woman of comparable caliber to himself, and Mary was still here with the same regrettable husband. Naturally, Mary being Matthew’s friend, it was no contest. But if it had been, he would probably have to say it did push the points slightly in his favor.

Though their quirks, the marriage was beginning to almost feel symbiotic; even if they shared no emotional attachment, they sure did work well together. And that was, after all, what mattered. And being both beautiful, diligent and of excellent merit, with a nice job, Elizabeth was a tough wife to be unhappy about.

His lips creased slightly as his eyes fell on Seth Hasenkamp. Surely a man worth their time, if only then for his surname. Lizzie having already broken the ice with a greeting, Matthew instead settled for a polite nod followed by a friendly smile to the blonde woman beside him. He did find it odd Lizzie didn’t address her sister but didn’t put words to it. He knew from interacting with Mary that the sisters sometimes had odd relationships, even if they stood together when it came to it.

The invitation had caught him completely off-guard, but it hadn't taken a lot of asking around to find out that the Hasenkamps were a big deal in Ridgeway, and an invitation like this wasn't something you brushed off lightly. Whether he deserved to be here and why, exactly, he'd been invited at all was still a mystery, but here he was.

Here they were. Gabriel flashed a smile up at Cameron and tucked her arm a little more securely into the crook of his elbow. "Breathe," he murmured, more for himself than for her sake, but he could hear it too. She was the social butterfly of the family. He was definitely more comfortable with artifacts than the social elite. "And smile. Everyone loves a smile." His was earnest, at least, and he squeezed Cameron's hand before tucking it back into his pocket.

"So. Where should we start?"

Moving to Ridgeway had been a transition to Cameron, that was for sure, but she had been more excited than worried, really. She was a people person, she always had been, and she was very certain that she’d find a place for herself and her family in Ridgeway. Besides, there were going to be people that at least Gabriel knew rather well, so they wouldn’t be completely alone. It was good.

The invitation to the soirée though, that had surprised her. Of course she felt convinced that it was her husband who had earned them the invitation, she couldn’t see why the elite would want to rub elbows with her, but that didn’t make her less eager to go. She never got to attend fancy parties, and she had the perfect dress. She had bought it ages ago but had never actually gotten to wear it, and just putting it on had made her all giddy.

She could hear Gabriel talking, but judging by his words he was trying to reassure himself rather than her. She knew he was out of his element here, and to support him she squeezed a little tighter on his arm with hers. She knew they made somewhat of a peculiar couple, the two of them, with her pale complexion in comparison to his darker, not to mention the fact that in these shoes she was just about 6 inches taller than him. Personally she’d always loved being the tallest, and he had never seemed to mind, but it was somewhat unusual.

“We could get a drink. Or try to find Diego. He’s supposed to be here somewhere, right? I’d love to meet his new partner”, she smiled at Gabriel, thinking that maybe a familiar face would relax him.
